Episode 80

In which the Off-Panelists get dark, like really dark. The Spaniard has a brush with death, while the Southerner and the Skirt have lazy holiday weekends. After discussing southern hijinks and PC terms for little people, the trio get into the week's news items and books, from Ten Grand and Fairest, to Green Hornet and The Owl. After that, they debate the merits of cannibalism, sexual assault, and human sacrifice. A normal show all around.

Review: Superman - Speeding Bullets

Ah, the Elseworlds brand. Renowned for it's constant misses rather than a slew of hits, DC Comics' banner of off-shoot stories, featuring their most popular characters released of the constraints of regular continuity, gained it's height of popularity throughout the 1990's. The goal of the brand was to challenge contemporary ideas of such classics as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and The Justice League with alternate takes that varied from the subtle-yet-obvious to the drastically different. On a number of levels, it was an outlet for writers to go nuts with whatever crazy concept they had. What if Batman were a pirate? What if Superman were raised by Darkseid? What if Wonder Woman, an Amazon, was found roaming the Wild West? Those ideas and more were presented to the market, and for a time, fans ate it up. It was an idea filled with a combination of endless potential and plenty of margin for error. And often times, it was error that was presented. So by the time that the early 2000's hit, the idea of DC's Elseworlds was unsurprisingly all but a dead brand, with only a few being books released over a period of year until it was quietly abandoned.

"Read This, You %&*#!": Hawkeye

Only eleven issues into its ongoing run, and Hawkeye has already become something of a divisive book in the comic world. You either think it's a fun and silly book that's refreshing, or you think it's stupid, fratboy humor that makes no sense. To those who support the latter, all I have to say is...

Episode 79

In which the Off-Panelists whip 'em out and compare sizes, discovering that it's not about length when it comes to comics. Join the Spaniard, Sloth, Scotsman, and Southerner for a round of personal humiliation and geek speak before diving into the likes of the second chapter of Scott Snyder's The Wake, new Image title Lazarus, the first issue of the new Batman/Superman title, Waid's Daredevil, and more. All that and a sick girlfriend for your troubles. What more could anyone want?

After the touching and refreshing character development of the previous issue, The Manhattan Projects latest issue has the same great character work with a tinge of sadness. After witnessing the great friendship between Enrico Fermi and Harry Daghilan in issue eleven, issue twelve takes that apart as the truth about Fermi’s alien origins is revealed.
