Review: And Then Emily Was Gone #1

 

Full disclosure: John Lees is a member of the Off-Panel Podcast and, obviously, a friend.

And Then Emily Was Gone #1 has only nineteen pages of story in between its covers... but, what a story it is. The Scottish duo of John Lees and Ian Laurie set up a lot of mystery and violence, in the first chapter of their supernatural mystery book. Ex-police detective Greg Hellinger is an expert on finding missing persons and a man literally battling his own inner demons. He is drawn into the case Emily Munro, a young girl from a small Scottish island who has seemingly vanished. 

I feel like the book draws a lot of inspiration from the famous off-kilter murder mystery televisions how Twin Peaks. And just like Twin Peaks, we're introduced to a small and isolated community, bizarre locals, and a boogeyman all at the heart of this mystery involving a young woman. There's a sense of dread in this first issue. You know something bad will happen eventually, but like some of the worse things in the world, you don't want to look away.

Episode 35

In which The Off-Panelists plot to send an asteroid heading towards Earth in attempt to rid them of a constant nuiscence, before realizing that they've actually got comic books to talk about. Once the confusion settles, the Spic, the Hick, the Prick, and SICBA Award Winner John Lees decide that Rob Liefeld is the true d-list of the comic book industry, before commencing the circle jerk for a Marvel book, getting onto eachother for not reading their own recommendations, complaining about the lack of a certain costume feature on one of DC's most recent reinventions, and fight against the dreaded menace of bald testicle lumps. Die, Scot Kimball, die!

In which The Off-Panelists of the week confuse a p-word with a c-word, as the three in attendance celebrate a truly landmark achievement in one of the crew's professional and personal lives. That's right, the crew celebrate Matt's birthday. Oh, and some other thing happened, too. After giving the due congratulations and giving one a de-promotion, the trio of terror talk up the release of The Amazing Spider-Man and give their reviews, with spoilers included, before finally moving onto the week's comics and an extremely prompt story segment.
